Reconstructive options are divided into two types: autologous (natural
tissue from the patient) or implantation (prosthetic).
| Latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction. |
Versions of
autologous reconstruction include flaps of tissue (TRAM, latissimus dorsi) which can be from parts of the body which
are nearby (pedicled) or distant (free tissue transfer).
| TRAM flap reconstruction. |
Prosthetic reconstructions
can be with saline or silicone implants. Implant reconstruction sometimes requires tissue expansion before permanent
implants are placed.
| Implant reconstruction of the breast. |
Any of these options can be performed either immediately following mastectomy or afterwards.
Dr Ross Zbar is an expert in many of these techniques.
